Blood vocabulary 

Meaning 

plasma

The colourless fluid part of blood, lymph, or milk, in which corpuscles or fat globules are suspended.

red blood cells

Blood cells that carry oxygen to all parts of the body.

haemoglobin

A red protein responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood of vertebrates. Its molecule comprises four subunits, each containing an iron atom bound to a haem group.

white blood cells

A type of blood cell that is made in the bone marrow and found in the blood and lymph tissue

haemocyanin

A protein containing copper, responsible for transporting oxygen in the blood plasma of arthropods and molluscs.

pathogens

A bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease.

phagocytes

A type of cell within the body capable of engulfing and absorbing bacteria and other small cells and particles.

lymphocytes

A lymphocyte is a type of white blood cell that is part of the immune system

clotting

Cover (something) with sticky matter.

antibodies

A blood protein produced in response to and counteracting a specific antigen. Antibodies combine chemically with substances which the body recognizes as alien, such as bacteria, viruses, and foreign substances in the blood.

nutrients

A substance that provides nourishment essential for the maintenance of life and for growth.
